Informed Consent 

STUDY TITLE: The Relationship Between Self-Compassion and Stress in Parents of Children with Psychological Disorders

RESEARCHERS: Angela Breitmeyer, Psy.D., Colette Hendry, B.A., Kate Jansen, Ph.D.  

We’re inviting you to participate in a research study. Participation is completely voluntary. If you agree to participate, you can always change your mind and withdraw. There are no negative consequences to withdrawing.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY?
The goal of this study is to determine the relationships between self-compassion, parenting stress, and life satisfaction in parents of children with and without psychological disorders.  

WHAT WILL I DO?
By participating in this survey, you will be answering questions related your general demographics (e.g., age, gender, ethnicity, etc.), as well as questions related to self-compassion, parenting stress, and life satisfaction. You can skip any questions you don’t want to answer or stop the survey entirely.

RISKS
Online data being hacked or intercepted: This is a risk you experience any time you provide information online. We’re using a secure system to collect this data, but we can’t completely eliminate this risk.

Breach of confidentiality: There is a chance your data could be seen by someone who shouldn’t have access to it. We’re minimizing this risk by keeping all data anonymous.

Psychological: You may experience some discomfort answering some of the questions on the survey. You have the option to discontinue this survey at any point without repercussion. Mental health resources will also be provided at the end of the survey.

BENEFITS: Benefits to the participants include contribution to knowledge about self-compassion, parenting stress, and life satisfaction in parents of children with and without psychological disorders.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE? The survey takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.

COMPENSATION: You will not be compensated for your participation in this study.

DATA STORAGE? We’ll store all electronic data on a password-protected, encrypted computer.

HOW LONG WILL DATA BE KEPT?  Data will be kept up to ten years after project completion.

WHO CAN SEE MY DATA?
  • We (the researchers) will have access to your anonymous data. This is so we can analyze the data and conduct the study.
  • We may share our findings in publications or presentations. If we do, the results will aggregate (grouped) data, with no individual results.
NOTICE OF USE OF INFORMATION FOR FUTURE RESEARCH IF YOU INTEND TO DO SO: “Your de-identified information may be used or shared with other researchers without your additional informed consent.”

VOLUNTARY PARTICIPATION:
PARTICIPATION IN RESEARCH IS VOLUNTARY. You may refuse to participate or may discontinue your participation AT ANY time, without penalty or loss of benefits, or change in your present or future care. The investigator also has the right to withdraw you from the study at any time. Your withdrawal from the study may be for reasons related to you (e.g., not following study-related directions from the investigator, a serious adverse event reaction) or because the entire study has been terminated. The Sponsor has the right to terminate the study of the investigator's participation in the study at any time.

This study has been reviewed and approved by the Midwestern University Institutional Review Board (AZ #1369).
