Borough Garbage Survey

Chatham Borough is in the process of obtaining a new contract for garbage disposal services. We are seeking feedback from Chatham residents about the current program and potential changes. * 3. The green bags program may add to the total cost of the Borough's garbage collection program because it requires bags to be manually picked up and because the hauler has to manage the purchase and distribution of the bags. However, proponents of the green bags appreciate the "pay as you throw" approach where those who throw out more pay more. It also encourages people to recycle and otherwise reduce garbage. Please provide your thoughts on the green bags.

* 4. If the Borough moved to standardized cans instead of the green bags, it could continue to encourage conservation by having residents pay different amounts for different sized cans - for example, a small can for seniors or individuals living alone, a standard can for families, and a large can (or two standards) for large families. This would require additional cost and effort to administer but would continue to Borough "pay as you throw" tradition. Please indicate your feedback on this.

All residents should get a large can and pay the same amount.

The Borough should distribute different sized cans and charge based on size, even if this requires additional staff time to implement.

* 5. Under the Borough's current bulk waste program, there is little enforcement on limits to the quantity of bulk waste that can be disposed of at no cost every month. (Currently residents are supposed to leave out at most one can of bulk items plus unlimited furniture and appliances). This does add to the Borough's costs for garbage collection. Please provide feedback on any possible changes to this program.

I would support continuing our current bulk program even if it costs more.

I would support a "sticker" program where residents are given an allowance (for example, one can plus two pieces of furniture) and then pay a set amount for additional bulk items.
