Background and Survey Questions

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) are broad statements that describe what graduates of engineering programs are expected to attain within a few years after graduation. They should be published along with other program information in the college catalog, publicly available to all program stakeholders.  PEOs should be informed by input from key program constituencies and they should also align with the unique mission of the institution.  As a stakeholder in our UI Mechanical Engineering program, please provide your input on the appropriateness of the PEOs that underlie our current ABET accreditation cycle. The information you provide is very important for preparing the self-study document that will be part of our 2019 program accreditation visit.

UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO LEARNING OUTCOMES

1.   Learn and Integrate – Through independent learning and collaborative study, attain, use, and develop knowledge in the arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences, with disciplinary specialization and the ability to integrate information across disciplines.

2.   Think and Create – Use multiple thinking strategies to examine real-world issues, explore creative avenues of expression, solve problems, and make consequential decisions.

3.   Communicate – Acquire, articulate, create and convey intended meaning using verbal and non-verbal methods of communication that demonstrate respect and understanding in a complex society.

4.   Clarify purpose and perspective – Explore one’s life purpose and meaning through transformational experiences that foster an understanding of self, relationships, and diverse global perspectives.

5.   Practice citizenship – Apply principles of ethical leadership, collaborative engagement, socially responsible behavior, respect for diversity in an interdependent world, and a service-oriented commitment to advance and sustain local and global communities.

Alumni of the program, three to five years after graduation, will have attained the following (numerically mapped to each of the UI learning outcomes above):

1. Career advancement based on knowledge as well as demonstrated skill in several of 
    the following areas: engineering analysis, modeling/simulation, design, manufacturing,
    and experimental methods

2. Demonstration of client and stakeholder satisfaction with engineering problem solutions
    obtained through wise use of available time, talent, and budgetary resources

3. Recognition as an accomplished communicator within their field/industry

4. Evidence of continued professional development such as professional licensure, pursuit
    of graduate study, success in obtaining various certifications, or active participation in
    technical conferences/forums

5. Expanded responsibilities for coordinating activities as well as collaborating with others within
    their organizations, professional community, and/or society at large
