Cambridge City Council is consulting on a proposal to restore a pond (shown purple on map) next to the Byron’s Pool car park meadow, during winter 2018/19. The pond is shown on historic maps, but has been largely lost to encroaching scrub. We propose to clear this scrub, using removed stumps and timber to create a hibernaculum for amphibians and invertebrates. The root plates of the mature ash will be avoided and a boundary of scrub between the neighbouring property will be retained. The pond will be dug and graded to the original silt  bed and all spoil will be removed from site.

It is envisaged that vegetation from the original seed bank and adjacent ponds will colonise over time and that invertebrates such as dragonflies and breeding amphibians will benefit from the early successional stages of the new shallow water body.
