Welcome,

Thank you for your interest in helping establish the Somali Centre for Culture and Recreation in Toronto.

For over three decades, Somalis across Canada advocated for the establishment of a Somali community centre that focuses on the cultural and recreational needs of the community. This centre is intended to be a community space that will serve the diverse programming needs of Somalis of all ages, including children, youth and seniors while also being a hub that preserves and celebrates the rich contribution and histories of Somali communities.

With incredible momentum and promise, in July 2022, Toronto City Council unanimously adopted Motion MM47.29 that commits to the establishment of a Somali community cultural and recreation centre in Toronto. This major milestone was the result of decades of community activism and a renewed strong partnership between elected members of City Council and the leaders of the Somali Centre for Culture and Recreation(SCCR).

The goal of this initiative is to build a beautiful, high quality, functional and sustainable physical space in Toronto that is of benefit to the whole of Toronto and while also showcasing the unique perspectives that the Somali community in Toronto has to offer. This public space will be a focal point for Somali creativity, community work, recreation, and for archiving Somali culture and heritage in Canada. As part of its contribution to city, the centre intends to enhance the cultural, economic, and social fabric as well as the natural environment of its surrounding community while also addressing an important service gap within the community.
