Background

Neighbourhood Plans (NPs) represent the opportunity for local people to shape planning policy in their area and help to make sure that planning decisions taken by North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) reflect local issues and not just District-wide concerns. Therefore, they add local detail to NWLDC strategic planning policies.

The Ashby de la Zouch NP passed Referendum on 22 November 2018 with a 92% ‘yes’ vote
and a turnout of 22%. The Plan was Made (became a part of the Local Development Plan for North West Leicestershire), by NWLDC on 29 November 2018 and has been used since then to help determine planning applications in the Neighbourhood Area based around the Plan’s commitment to ensuring that any new housing meets a local need, that the important environmental areas are protected, and that community facilities and business development remain appropriate to the community.

A decision was taken by the Town Council in 2022 to undertake a review of the NP following changes in the local and national strategic planning policy framework, and a Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group was re-established by the Town Council in October 2022. The Neighbourhood Area includes the whole of the Parish with the Exception of the Blackfordby Ward, which is a distinct settlement in its own right. Blackfordby has its own NP, Made in 2022.
