1. Alternative Break Student Leader Application

We ask that students applying for the Alternative Break Student Leader position complete the following form on or by April 15th, 2012. Applicants are also required to submit a cover letter and resume to opportunities@depauw.edu on or by April 15th, 2012. Further instructions are found at the end of this form.

Please note, this position is a full year commitment, beginning in April (Summer Free). You must be on campus both semesters and available to lead for the duration of both Fall and Spring break 2012-13.

* 2. Identify one issue that you are passionate about. What is that issue? What necessary measures have you taken in order to better understand that issue? What skill(s) are you hoping to gain from this leadership position that will better enhance your ability to be more involved with that issue?

* 3. As a student leader you will be assuming an important role of influence amongst your peers. Describe a past experience in which you held some type of leadership role within a team. What were the challenges of this role? How well did you work with others? How did you deal with disagreements? How does such an experience qualify you for the position you currently seek?

* 4. Undertaking a leadership role on an off-campus course can prove to be very demanding. Sometimes the unexpected occurs and things don’t go according to plan. Have you ever found yourself in a situation where what was originally planned never happened? How did you improvise?

* 5. Being a student leader is a year-long and often time intensive role. Please describe how you intend to manage your time and additional commitments if selected as the Alt Break Student Leader.

* 6. References

References should be faculty, staff or community members whom you have worked with. If you have previously participated in an DePauw Alternative Break, we ask that one of your references be a faculty/staff leader from that trip.

Be sure to ask your references for their permission prior to listing their names below. Inform them that they do not need to submit a letter of recommendation. Instead, they may receive an email or telephone call from Kelsey Schultz, Off Campus Study and Service Advisor, between April 15 - April 30, 2012.
