The Rural Readiness Project is a three phased approach to rural readiness for psychiatry trainees and Specialist International Medical Graduates (SIMG) as part of the
Rural Psychiatry Roadmap 2021-2031. This national project will enhance professional, clinical, and social orientation required to train and practice in rural, regional, and remote areas of Australia as a psychiatrist.
The Rural Readiness Project includes three (3) phases of targeted learning:
Phase 1: Successful completion of the RANZCP online Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health modules
Phase 2: Successful completion of online eLearning Professional Orientation to Rural Psychiatry Services modules
Phase 3: Attendance at a face-to-face Rural Readiness workshop, delivering clinical and social orientation to training and working in rural, regional and remote areas of Australia as a psychiatrist.
The College will deliver seven (7) face-to-face Rural Readiness workshops across Australia commencing May 2025 in all states and territories other than the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). When completing the form below, trainees/SIMG should choose the workshop in the state or territory they are currently training in. Trainees or SIMG based in the ACT who are interested in attending a workshop may attend the Victorian or New South Wales (NSW) workshop.
The workshops run for a full day (Saturday) and are designed as an opportunity to learn from each other with presentations from psychiatrists with experience of working in rural locations. Selected participants will be funded for accommodation, travel and meals. Workshop topics will include, but not be limited to:
· The future of psychiatry in a rural location
· Preparing for the rural training environment
· Practical case studies and ethical dilemmas of psychiatry in rural locations
· Peer support opportunities and social activities.
Trainees in all stages as well as SIMG are invited to express interest in attending a workshop using this form. Please note that due to restricted numbers in the workshops, submission of an Expression of Interest will not guarantee your place. Eligibility for attendance at the workshop will be assessed against criteria and is awarded at the discretion of the Selection Panel.
Prior to completing the form, check the Modified Monash Model (2019) classification of where you are training.
