Black Househeads

You are invited to be in a research study to learn from Black adults who love house music and came of age during the 1980s. In order to participate, you must meet the following criteria: 1) be of African descent, 2) like house music, and 3) are at least 48 years old. This study is being conducted by Dr. Eleanor Seaton at Arizona State University.

If you agree to be in this study, I will ask you to take an online survey, which will take approximately 30 minutes. The questionnaire can be completed online using Survey Monkey.

There are no foreseeable risks or discomforts to you and the risks of participation in this study are minimal. Any minimal risk would be no more than that which you would encounter in everyday life. While there are no foreseen risks or inconveniences in this study if you participate, you may withdraw at any time from the study if you should choose to discontinue participation.

It is anticipated that the participants will greatly benefit from the proposed project. For many Black adults who grew up in the Chicago area (e.g., city of Chicago, Chicago suburbs, northwestern Indiana) during the 1980s, house music evokes feelings of nostalgia and happiness.

You may not be directly compensated for participation in the study. Upon completion of the survey, your name will be entered into a raffle drawing for the chance to win an $100 gift card. Five names will be randomly drawn to each receive a $100 gift card.

Upon completion of the electronic survey, you will be assigned a number. The data from participant surveys will not contain any identifying information. All electronic files data will be stored on password-protected computers at Arizona State University. The researcher (e.g., Dr. Eleanor Seaton) will be the only one with individual access to the data. The information gathered in the study may be published and used for presentations. Federal regulations require that the researcher keeps all interview data and consent forms.

Participation in this study is voluntary. Your decision whether or not to participate will not affect your current or future relations with Arizona State University. If you decide to participate, you are free to not answer any question or withdraw at any time without affecting those relationships.
