* 2. Music Theory Classes *
Recommended for musicians in grades 7-12, these allow serious young musicians to expand their musical knowledge base. Two levels are offered.

* 3. The John Downey Creation Project for young composers*
This program offers select musicians the opportunity to work with a professional composer to compose their own pieces of music culminating in a world premiere concert performance by a MYSO ensemble.

* 4. Volunteering
Anyone eager to become involved in projects within MYSO is encouraged to volunteer. Parents, grandparents, other family and friends and members supply critical support as organizational volunteers. Complete the Volunteer Interest Survey at www.myso.org. Areas for which we need assistance include:
  • Concert assistance
  • Equipment assistance
  • Weekly rehearsal attendance tracking
  • Photography
  • Auditions
  • Data entry and other clerical assistance
  • Staffing audition appointment phone line
  • Being an ambassador by representing MYSO

Players in advanced ensembles are offered the opportunity to mentor younger musicians.

Periodic opportunities exist for musicians to perform a short solo work and receive feedback from a professional musician.

Soloists and small ensembles are offered paid performance opportunities, for both private events and for United Performing Arts Fund's workplace giving program.

Members will be notified of performers’ upcoming appearances.

* 9. Recording sessions*
Members are offered the opportunity for an individual professional recording session.

* 10. Conversation Series (for parents)
These are sessions for parents covering a variety of composers and interesting music-related topics; get a more in-depth look at what our musicians are learning in their ensembles.

* 11. Concerto Competitions
Annual concerto competitions are offered for seven ensembles, in which individual musicians prepare and perform a movement of a concerto with an accompanist in competition with their peers. The winners receive the opportunity to be the featured soloist with his or her ensemble.

* 12. Davidson Chamber Ensemble Program*
The Davidson Chamber Ensembles Program allows our musicians to play in small chamber ensembles, coached by area professionals, which perform on a spring recital. This program is by invitation.

* 13. Erika Z. Richman MSO/MYSO Reading Workshop
MYSO and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (MSO) sponsor this exciting opportunity, available to members of the Senior Symphony, in which they have the opportunity to rehearse challenging repertoire with MSO musicians.

Open to Senior Symphony members only; information will be sent automatically to these musicians.

* 15. Summer Programming*
Several summer opportunities for young musicians may be offered including:
  • a steel band camp for students residing or attending school in the City of Milwaukee
