An Engineers Ireland student engineering competition sponsored by Siemens to recognise and award the best projects by third level engineering students that showcase innovative, sustainable design and commercial potential.

You can use this form for the 2023 Siemens Innovative Student Engineer of the Year Award:
 
Standard application criteria will be that the applicant(s) are a member of Engineers Ireland at time of application, either enrolled on a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate master engineering programme or a 2023 graduate of an undergraduate or postgraduate master.
 
1. Project Submission
The project must be submitted in written format (essay or presentation style acceptable) and complying with the assessment criteria. You can include supporting evidence and images (recommended). Please ensure to answer the questions asked and proofread before submitting.

Project Background:
In your written submission, please provide background to yourself or other team members involved in the project including your programme, how the team was formed and the different roles. For background to project, please outline where the idea came from and the problem that you're attempting to solve.

2. Assessment Criteria
 
Technical:
Has the applicant(s) outlined the engineering principals underpinning the project?

Design:
Has the applicant(s) described the design process and the key features/elements of the project?

Innovation:
Has the applicant(s) compared the project with existing knowledge / research / designs / products, and highlighted how the project is innovative?
 
Commercial Viability:
Has the applicant(s) outlined a route to market, and provided a business plan, financing, manufacture, distribution, marketing and sales strategy?
 
Technology:
Is there elements of digitalisation / new business models / AI / sensors / cloud?
 
Sustainability:
Has the applicant(s) factored in sustainability in their project and demonstrated how it can minimise its impact on the environment throughout the whole process

Presentation:
Has the applicant(s) demonstrated good written skills and laid out the project in clear and well-structured manner?
 
3. Next Steps

All valid entries will be assessed by a panel and successful projects will be shortlisted for the Award Final taking place in the Autumn (Date TBC). If shortlisted, the finalist will be expected to give a presentation and discuss their project in front of a panel of judges (up to 5 mins) and answer any questions.
