SPN Wants to Hear from You!

SPN is looking for representatives from each state who are interested in their state legislation. The below description will help you to know if you are the right candidate.

The Role of the State Liaison:
  • State liaisons facilitate communications between SPN headquarters and SPN members in a specific state. This role is fitting for someone who is active with SPN headquarters, within a state chapter, or other SPN community. The ideal candidate is a good communicator, enjoys organizing others, uses social media well, and understands SPN’s state advocacy strategies.
  • State liaisons can help relay information, resources, and updates between SPN headquarters and SPN members in a particular state. Liaisons can also help organize members to participate in a state advocacy effort, keep members informed on state-specific policy developments, and communicate SPN resources to advocates.
  • Liaisons keep SPN headquarters updated on state policy developments, advocacy efforts, and stakeholder advocacy activities. Liaisons can also help identify SPN advocates at the state level who can help with SPN-specific advocacy. A designated SPN committee or a staff member can facilitate communications with all state liaisons, organize and distribute advocacy resources, and serve as SPN’s contact for state advocacy efforts.

Qualifications:
  • Member of SPN
  • Familiar with state legislative process and overall policy landscape on current advocacy topics
  • Comfortable with social media; has a social media presence/social media familiarity. Experienced with state advocacy and familiar with grassroots campaigns.
  • Comfortable engaging and contacting SPN members, students, stakeholders, and the public.
  • Understands and adheres to SPN high-level advocacy strategy and uses SPN advocacy talking points, resources, and communications as directed.
  • Generally familiar with SPN’s governance and operations.

Expectation of the State Liaison Role:
  • Complete an SPN state-liaison semi-annual (frequency dependent on level of activity) report template to relay relevant state policy developments, associated advocacy activities, and note any promising SPN state advocates to SPN headquarters.
  • SPN will distribute those updates to SPN members either within the corresponding state or to entire membership (depending on relevancy)
  • Fill out the case study questionnaire for tactics used (both successful and not so successful)
  • The amount of time committed will depend on level of activity within state.
