Cohasset Board of Public Health Well Survey

The Cohasset Board of Public Health is conducting a private well survey this summer to determine the specific locations of wells on private properties. The purpose of this well survey is to better protect the private water supplies in town. Engineers and contractors routinely reach out to the Board of Health for well locations:
·         To meet setback requirements when upgrading failing septic systems
·         To meet setback requirements when siting new septic systems for new construction
·         After a chemical spill or release to understand potential impacts to nearby water supplies
The reason we are reaching out is to get permission to allow a summer intern briefly onto your property to take a reading on a hand-held GPS monitor to record the latitude and longitude of the well. They will be recognizable in reflective vests and driving town vehicles. They will be using a hand-held global positioning system (GPS) to take a reading. This information will then be used to update our GPS mapping.
We are just asking that you fill out a brief survey. It can be found on the front page of the town’s website. It will ask for your property address, the type of well (potable, irrigation or both), and the approximate well location on your property. If your well is located inside a garage or home, they will take the reading outside of that building. If your well has been abandoned, we ask that you take a moment and fill out to the survey to document that information as well. If you have any comments or questions please feel free to contact the Health Department office at (781) 383-4100 x5119 or email Pam Fahey at pfahey@cohassetma.org.

Thank you,
