Trauma Informed Care (TIC) is the framework for patient care that acknowledges that health care organizations and care teams need to have a complete picture of a patient’s life situation — past and present — in order to provide effective and comprehensive health care services with a healing orientation. At its foundation, TIC seeks to:
•  Realize the widespread impact of mental and physical trauma and understand paths for recovery;
•  Recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma in patients, families, and staff;
•  Integrate knowledge about trauma into policies, procedures, and practices; and
•  Actively avoid re-traumatization
Adopting trauma-informed care practices can potentially improve patient engagement, treatment adherence, and health outcomes, as well as improve provider and staff wellness. It can also help reduce costs by providing comprehensive care prior to significant disease progression and support understanding and appropriate resources for patients.1 The American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS-COT) endorses a trauma-informed approach and is piloting a high-level course in 2022.
