An Exploration of the Relationship between Maximum Heart Rate & Age Prediction Formula, 220-Age.

Dear Participant,

My name is Patrick Gannon and I’m a mature student of BSc in Sports Science and Coaching. I would appreciate your help with my thesis "An Exploration of the Relationship between Maximum Heart Rate and the Age Prediction Formula, 220-Age”.

My theory is the formula is not an accurate method for sports performance for endurance events. Studies have shown MaxHRs change similar to resting HRs and as athletes become more accustomed to higher intensities MaxHRs reduce, while during the detraining phase, it rises.

According to some researchers, greater accuracy is found during competition, followed by training then laboratory testing, therefore, allowing for greater percentage accuracy for the intensities in training programmes.

I hope I’ve explained some of the research relating to this study, if it’s unclear please ask.

To participate in the study, you will need to wear a heart rate monitor during training and competitions to collect the data and have it on hand before you commence with the survey. I recommend the use of Strava or Map My Run, which can be found in the app store on your phone, to help record it.

Participants will also be required to complete a survey which will provide you the opportunity to indicate your consent for the use of your data.

If you decide to participate in this study, your participation and any information collected from you will be strictly confidential and only available to the research team.

We would like to thank you in advance for your participation.

Question Title

* 1. Name:

Question Title

* 2. Male / Female

Question Title

* 3. Date of birth

Question Title

* 4. From data saved in 2019, state the Max HRs that Failed to reach, Succeeded to reach and Exceeded the age predicted formula  while performing at Maximum Perceived Effort. (Usually performed in competition but not always. Studies have shown Max HRs  can reduce as a result of intensive training, therefore it's possible rates will fail to reach the age predicted formula). (This data could be forwarded as soon as you can, thank you.)

Question Title

* 5. From saved data during the 2019 season, please state the Max HRs achieved during  either competition/training or laboratory testing where it Reached and Exceeded the age predicted formula. Example. C: 175 Tr: 175 :lab: 175. (Please forward this data as soon as yon can, thank you.)

Question Title

* 6. Please state the Max HR achieved during competition/testing where it Reached and Exceeded the age predicted formula during January - March, 2020. Example. Race 1: 178bpm

Question Title

* 7. Please state the Max HR achieved during training where it Reached and Exceeded the age predicted formula during January - March, 2020. Example. Session 1: 148bpm

Question Title

* 8. 1. I understand that my participation is voluntary and that I may withdraw from the research at any time without giving any reason.
2. I am aware of what my participation will involve.
3. I understand that there are no risks involved in the participation of this study.
4. All questions that I have about the research have been satisfactorily answered.

Question Title

* 9. If you decide to participate in this study, your participation and any information collected from you will be strictly confidential and only available to the research team.

Do you consent to the above Data, provided by you, being used in this study?
