Dear Participant,

This study is designed to investigate how individuals from racial/ethnic minority backgrounds react to subtle acts of discrimination. We are particularly interested in understanding and examining the varied ways in which individuals cope with microaggressions. This study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board at Towson University. Please note that you must be 18 years of age or older to participate in this study. If you are under 18, please exit the survey at this time. WE STRONGLY ENCOURAGE INDIVIDUALS OF RACIAL/ETHNIC MINORITY BACKGROUNDS TO PARTICIPATE.

Participating in this study will require you to complete a survey online. This survey will take you approximately 15 minutes. All information you provide in these surveys will be kept strictly confidential. We used an online software program to create this survey called SurveyMonkey. All of your answers will be password protected in SurveyMonkey, and can only be accessed by the research staff. An individualized link will be generated that leads directly to your own personal survey. Please ensure that whichever preferred email address you provide us with is accessible only by you. Please realize that you are free to leave blank any questions that make you uncomfortable or that you do not wish to answer. You may also choose to withdraw from this study at any point during the surveys. The researchers will not ask you to provide any identifying information (with the exception of your email address for contact purposes and to be optionally entered in a drawing to receive one of two $50 cash prizes). If you are participating in this study for extra credit, you will not be eligible for the cash prize.

There are minimal risks associated with participation in this study. Some questions may bring up upsetting memories or past experiences in which you have faced racism or discrimination. If you should become distressed by answering any of the questions in the survey, you may end your participation in this study. If you experience significant grief after completing these surveys, we recommend that you contact the Towson University Counseling Center at 410-704-2512.

To reiterate, all information collected in these surveys will be kept strictly confidential. Your name will not be attached to any information you provide; you will be identified through an identification number. No publications or reports from this project will include identifying information on any participant. By clicking continue, you are acknowledging that you are 18 years of age or older and you are providing your informed consent to participate in our study. You are also indicating you understand that you can withdraw from the study at any time.

Thank you for taking the time to answer this survey. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this study or your participation, you can email Dr. Dunn’s research team (microaggressionsresearch@gmail.com), Dr. Dunn (mdunn@towson.edu) or Towson University Institutional Review Board (ospr@towson.edu).
