GUSU 2 Cure hopes to discover your interest in a co-op gym for the SCI community in the Twin Cities

GUSU 2 CURE is a grassroots non-profit organization formed out of the SCI community who are committed to expediting innovations for the treatment of paralysis. As part of that pursuit we have successfully helped to pass legislation in Minnesota that will provide funding for SCI research that is working to provide functional improvement for SCI. It has also become clear to us that the community must be physically prepared to maximize the benefit of innovations on the horizon; bone density, muscle atrophy, contracture, autonomic issues among many others are obstacles that a full body physical fitness routine can help to limit and even reverse.
Simply put, if the Cure were available today most in the SCI community would not be physically ready to maximize its potential gains. It would require years of hard rehabilitative work. Its our assertion that the time is now to make ready.
Of course, the cost of traditional rehab is expensive and limited by most health insurances. The costs of activity based therapy programs are as expensive and are often out of pocket, so even more cost prohibitive, notwithstanding time commitments added to folks daily routines and limited hours for working folks. This is why GUSU2Cure is proposing a different model for an SCI Gym. We are proposing a co-op style gym that would function much like a YMCA. The GUSU gym would be collectively owned as an effort to keep costs down by spreading membership out across the community and thereby not be wholly dependent uponĀ  grants and fundraising nor individuals to lay out large sums of money to consistently work out.
We believe that operating the GYM with this kind of model will be able to provide a more affordable, flexible and aggressive form of Activity Based Exercise than what is currently available in the community. But it depends upon your interest and willingness to commit in order to for this idea to be successful.
Please complete the survey below, and remember this is not a traditional market survey. This is not a profit making venture. This is an effort to use our imagination towards finding a better solution for improving the quality of life for folks living with paralysis and empowering our SCI community.
