Dear Respondents:

Thank you for agreeing to complete this questionnaire. Your response will help UNESCO to gather data about young people’s access and response to media and information literacy competencies.

It should only be completed by youth between ages 15-25 years.

This questionnaire was prepared by Alton Grizzle, Programme Specialist in Communication and Information, United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). This research is part of a PhD programme at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain and is linked to UNESCO’s global actions to promote MIL among all citizens.

Your participation is crucial and will help to inform UNESCO’s design and expansion of its media and information literacy programme globally.

The research is connected to two Massively Open Online Courses on Media and Information Literacy (MIL MOOC). The first MIL MOOC is now ongoing and students who are enrolled for that course have already responded to this questionnaire. They will be asked to complete the questionnaire again three months after completing the course. If you are enrolled in the online MIL course being offered by UNESCO and Athabasca University, please do not complete this questionnaire in connection with this request.

The research design requires that another set of young people who are not enrolled to the first MIL MOOC questionnaire, respond to the questionnaire. It will help us to understand your knowledge, skills and attitudes relating to media and information literacy.

Your participation will also enable us design a second MIL MOOC and to make a good match between the content of the course and the people who are interested in taking it.

Your participation in this research will put you in no danger. This is not a test similar to the ones done in school. You will not be graded or blocked from taking future MIL MOOCs based on your answers on the questionnaire. Please respond truthfully. None of your personal information will be shared with anyone, excluding those persons who administer the questionnaire online.

You will be contacted three to four months after you have completed the questionnaire for the first time to do a second questionnaire. You can choose to withdraw from the research at any time.

The questionnaires are meant to be completed over three days. I can be contacted at grizzleunesco@gmail.com.
