Bryce Schaben

Currently: I serve on the Shelby County Conservation Board for the past three and a half years as one of my committee assignments as a Shelby County Supervisor. I am also the Habitat Chair for Shelby County Pheasants Forever. I own two small business, Schaben Vizslas and Schaben Tree and Prairie Management. I’m also a certified basketball official and volunteer fireman.

Professionally: I started my conservation career as a summer intern for Crawford County Conservation Board in the mid 80’s. After receiving my AS in Recreation and BS in Biological Science and Wildlife Ecology, I accepted a position as Ranger/ Naturalist with the Shelby County Conservation Board. I then graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy with the 132nd Basic Class. After serving 10 years as a Ranger, I took over the Shelby County IRVM program and managed it for 23 years until my retirement in 2023. I have served as a Shelby County Supervisor since 2023 and am running unopposed for my second term.

Personally: My wife Carrie and I have 3 children Jake, Josh and Jess. We have soon to be 8 grandchildren. I enjoy spending time with the grandkids and going to their activities, fishing and hunting and sports.

Philosophies: I’m am willing to serve on the ICCS Board because I believe the county conservation board system is one of the best conservation organizations in the country. Conservation Boards offer a host of programs and land management options tailored to individual counties and are run at peak efficiency. Our current economical environment is going to be a challenge for all county offices in the upcoming years. State tax laws restricting revenues and high inflation will make budget time challenging for our counties. I would like to help the county conservation board system move forward and continue do the great work they do.

Craig Hartman

Currently: I am currently serving as chair of the Monona Co Conservation Board on my second tenure. I have been on the board for almost 23 years and have been board chair for 15 years altogether.

Previously: For several years, I served on the board for the Siouxland Trails Foundation and held the positions of Vice President and President . During my time on the foundation, I helped organize fund raising events and spoke in front of the Sioux City council on behalf of the area trail systems. I also represented the foundation and the conservation board on the Lewis and Clark trails project steering committee administered by the Iowa DOT per funding from the US DOT.

After I retired, I became a Court Appointed Special Advocate in Woodbury County for a couple of years working with foster care children who were adjudicated to be a child in need of assistance

Professionally: I was employed by the State of Iowa, 3rd Judicial District Department of Corrections for 35 years as a Parole/Probation Officer. The last 13 years I worked in our Intensive Supervision unit for sex offenders and parolees. I also served on Sioux City Police Department’s gang suppression unit. I have been retired for the past 7 years

Personally: I am an avid cyclist and have hunted and fished all my life. I have lived on the Missouri River for the past 30 years near Sloan. I have been married 40 years and am an active member in my church.

Philosophies: Coming from a less populated county with limited funding, I believe we have always taken advantage of opportunities when they have become available. Our staff along with the board has always functioned as a team working towards improving our parks and other facilities. I still enjoy serving with our staff and the other board members.
