Dear Participant,

We are currently seeking people over the age of 18 years old to participate in a study conducted by Tim Campbell, a 4th year Psychology Honours student, under the supervision of Associate Professor Kate Moore at Federation University Australia. We are interested in understanding better the interaction between sensitivity of personality, the experience of parental bonding in childhood, and how these factors interact with coping strategies on people’s level of social anxiety. This project has received clearance from the Federation University Australia Human Research Ethics Committee and we wish to invite you to participate.

Participation is voluntary and involves completing an online survey consisting of questions about your personality, parental style in your childhood, your coping strategies, and social anxiety. You will also be asked to provide basic demographic information of age and gender. You are free to withdraw from the study at any time without penalty by closing your web browser. Please note that, because this study is anonymous, once you have submitted the survey it will not be possible to identify and remove your data. Submission of the completed survey is deemed to be your informed consent to participate in the study.

Responses obtained from the completion of the survey will form a larger database, where no individual results will be reported, only group data. Only the listed researchers will have access to the anonymous data. Data will be stored securely for a minimum of five years before it is destroyed appropriately. Should any publications arise from this research, confidentiality will be maintained and no identifiable information will be used.

There are no specific risks associated with this study, however, if you experience any distress as a result of the questions asked, contact Lifeline (13 11 14) or Beyond Blue (1300 224 636) to discuss your issues. If any distress persists, it is recommended that you contact a General Practitioner. For students of Federation University Australia, you may contact the Federation University Australia Counselling Service (Ballarat/Wimmera (03) 5327 9470; Gippsland/Berwick (03) 5122 6425).

A summary of results of the study will be available in November 2017. Participants interested in receiving this information are advised to contact Dr Kate Moore and the summary will be posted out to you upon availability.

Thank you for your consideration in participating in this study.
