Teaching Pragmatic Competence: Exploring Teachers’ Perceptions, Practices, and Challenges

Participant Information Sheet

My name is Alyssa Landry and I am an ESL teacher at a language school in Dublin and a postgraduate student with the Centre for English and Global Languages at University College Dublin. My MA thesis examines teachers’ perceptions of pragmatic instruction their classroom practices, as well as potential challenges faced by teachers.

Project Title:
“Teaching Pragmatic Competence: Exploring Teachers’ Perceptions, Practices, and Challenges”

I wish to invite you to participate in this study. Participating in the research will involve completing a questionnaire (6 – 10 minutes). The questions will ask about your beliefs on teaching pragmatic competence, your classroom practices, and what challenges you may face incorporating pragmatics instruction. All answers and opinions that you give will be completely confidential and your employer will have no access to your results at any time.

What will happen if you decide to take part in this research study?
You will complete the following questionnaire. This should take 6 – 10 minutes to complete. An optional next-step would include an interview (in-person or online) to discuss your perceptions, instructional practices, and potential challenges in more depth (max. 20 mins).

How will I protect your privacy?
The information collected will be confidential. Only my supervisor and I will have access to the information collected. When the study is finished the data will be completely de-identified. No identifiable information will be kept.

What are the risks of taking part in this research study?
The risks in taking part in this research study are minimal. Anonymity will be maintained throughout the research. Your employer will at no stage have or gain access to the information that you supply.

Can I change my mind at any stage and withdraw from the study?
Yes, you can change your mind at any stage and stop participating in the study. However, once the information has been de-identified it will not be possible to remove the data.
