  • About NEWL
The Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy at UMass Boston is excited to host its third annual NEW Leadership® Massachusetts (NEWL) Summer Institute, after its second successful year as the Commonwealth's NEWL organizing partner. The NEWL model was developed by the Center for American Women in Politics (CAWP) at Rutgers University and has been running successfully for more than 20 years. This non-partisan program is designed to give high school, undergraduate, and graduate students the tools to become effective leaders in the political arena regardless of their academic interests or career path. No prior political or policy experience is necessary.

During the summer institute, students will meet women and gender-expansive leaders from across Massachusetts, learn about their women’s participation in American politics, and develop and practice leadership skills through panel discussions, workshops, and projects. After the summer institute, participants become part of NEWL’s national network of distinguished alumnae. NEWL MA students will also be invited to participate in CWPPP and future NEWL follow-up events.

The NEW Leadership® MA Summer Institute will be held June 5-7, 2024:
  • Wednesday and Thursday, June 5 & June 6 from 9:30 am to 3 pm EST will be held virtually on Zoom
  • Fri. June 7 from 9:00 am to 2 pm will be held on the UMass Boston campus.
Participants should be available to attend all the sessions. Over the three days, students will participate in a variety of programming sessions and exciting virtual or in person events and will also have access to online resources. Breaks will be scheduled throughout the course of each day.

Cost
