Background on the Academy

Background on the Academy:

NYATEP aims to create an informed, coordinated base of advocates to educate policymakers about the role of workforce development in communities, and the critical importance of federal, state and local policy that is reflective of local organizational needs and best practices.

In 2011, the New York Association of Training & Employment Professionals (NYATEP) launched the Workforce Academy for Policy and Advocacy, initially funded by the NYC Workforce Funders to develop a strong base of advocates in New York City.  To reflect the importance of upstate and downstate advocacy coordinate, NYATEP took the Academy fully in house to include programs from across New York State.   Alumni of the Academy now tops 200 participants, and includes leaders who have moved on to Executive and Senior level positions, including several who have run for political office!

We are excited to launch this year's cohort, and look forward to your application.

Academy Specifics:

What I will learn at the Academy:
• A deep and practical understanding of the legislative and budgetary processes in New York State, and at the Federal level.
• Exposure to National, State, and local experts through in-person events; including two required legislative site visits: one in Albany and/or DC to meet and one to a local elected official in the District office.
• Tangible tools and experience creating and delivering an advocacy strategy that you can replicate in your own work.
• A new learning network for all participants, past, present, and future, to continue to connect and work together. Including an opportunity to work and network with a cohort of colleagues from across the State.

How will I learn?
The Academy includes a series of in-person seminars with leading experts, required legislative site visits to provide an opportunity for the participants to utilize their learning. The Academy will culminate in a graduation ceremony that will require you to reflect on your experience in the program. Full participation and regular attendance is essential for participation in this program.

What else do I need to know?
Participation in the Academy is free.  However, attendees will be responsible for making  and paying for their own travel arrangements.  During the Academy sessions, breakfast and lunch will be included.  Optional happy hours and group activities will also be arranged. Dependent on funding there may be small stipends available to defray the cost of travel.   We strive for 100% attendance; and ask that participants miss no more than 1 day of the program.
