SURVEY INTRODUCTION
Exempt | Protocol #10201 | v3 | Approved: Mar 19, 2026
AUTHORS: Dr. Swathi Mutteni - Resident, Dr. Rana Almudamgha - Orofacial Pain Program Director
PURPOSE:This study aims to evaluate dentists’ knowledge of orofacial pain conditions, their diagnostic
confidence, and their referral practices in the states of Louisiana and Georgia. The results will
inform licensed general dentists and dental specialists about existing knowledge gaps, diagnostic
challenges, and referral pathways related specifically to orofacial pain, with the goal of
improving patient care outcomes through timely and appropriate referral to board‑certified
orofacial pain specialists.
WHY THIS MATTERS:Orofacial pain is often misdiagnosed or inadequately managed, leading to delayed management,
mismanagement, and prolonged patient discomfort. This study aims to identify dentists’
knowledge gaps, referral patterns, and barriers to orofacial pain management. The findings will
help shape continuing education initiatives for dentists focused on recognizing and managing
orofacial pain conditions. This is particularly critical in the southern states of the United States,
where access to board-certified orofacial pain specialists remains limited (Dr. Heir et al., 2024).
By providing these insights, the study seeks to inform strategies that may enhance diagnostic
accuracy and referral practices.
VOLUNTARY PARTICIPATION:Your participation is voluntary. The survey does not collect your name or any personally
identifying information. Responses will be stored securely and analyzed in aggregate, ensuring
individual answers cannot be traced back to you. Data will be used solely for research purposes
and will not be shared outside the study team. You may skip any questions or stop the survey at
any time without penalty.
TIME COMMITMENT:The survey should take approximately 6–10 minutes to complete
