Your feedback has identified that the community feels strongly about all the options to create new, to add to, and to remove various historical markers and place names. Phase 2 of this initiative includes gathering input on criteria to evaluate and guide how we move forward in reconciling our City’s history.

The feedback gathered in Phase 2 will help refine draft recommendations for Council’s consideration.

Proposed Nomination Process

A draft recommendation for coordinating requests to create new, add to, or remove various historical markers and place names is to create an umbrella policy that will enhance  existing processes and create a new process for areas that do not have processes that incorporates community voices.

The proposed process includes the following steps:
1. Formal application
  • Community Consultation conducted/support letter
  • Provides rationale
2. Department with Indigenous Relations Division involvement
  • Review criteria and Indigenous lens and initial community voice
3. Committee of Community members
  • Provide Indigenous lens Provide community voice
  • Make recommendation or make decision
