Small towns and rural areas contribute significantly to the health of larger urban centres by providing talented workforce, land area to support industry and agriculture, a refreshing perspective for lifestyle, a place for recreation, an escape from the city bustle and local goods, produce and crops, and more.

Significant strength in our province comes from the hard-working people of rural communities.

Small towns and rural communities provide people with a place they can get to know each other, connect and belong.

Small towns offer a very important quality of life that can’t be found in larger urban centres, where it may be easier and more inviting to connect with neighbours and outdoor spaces.

Small towns offer a very strong sense of community.

Small towns often don’t have large taxpayers and rely heavily on residential taxes to maintain service levels. This creates a very strong dedication to making every dollar count. It can also create larger tax rates for residents.

Small towns often do not have the financial resources to meet the demand for programs and services that may be found in larger urban centres.

People in small towns tend to be very resourceful and often find ways to support each other.

Town staff must be resourceful and innovative to meet unique challenges. Partnerships are common to make ends meet.

As a resident of a small town, you may have a bigger voice than an individual in a city because the population is smaller. You may be more likely to get a very personal response to your concerns.

In small towns, people feel more empowered that they can affect change.

Social support systems are not as common in small communities, due to a lack of financial resources. Large program costs can be difficult to meet to support a small number of people.

People in small towns are more aware of what their neighbours are doing. This can create opportunities for connection and a sense of taking care of each other.

Small towns typically do not have the financial resources to support policing costs.

Small towns can be victims of crime from people coming from large urban centres.

Infrastructure maintenance and renewal is typically more difficult in small towns than in larger urban centres because of significant maintenance costs and lack of financial resources.

Grant funds for communities are often based on a per capita basis, making it more difficult for small municipalities to support their infrastructure with grants.

It is often more difficult for small communities to attract contractors, businesses and services.

Price, selection and availability of goods and services differs in small towns compared to larger urban centres.

Small communities offer incredible strength in contributing to Alberta’s future.
