Thank you for your interest in applying for CYAN’s Youth Board of Directors!  Please note, you must read the following board requirements before completing and submitting your application.  Your participation requires your travel and attendance to at least 3 in-person meetings (all expenses paid) as well as regular attendance to monthly online meetings throughout the school year.  
 
WHAT IS CYAN?
The California Youth Advocacy Network (CYAN) is a statewide organization dedicated to supporting youth and young adult tobacco prevention advocacy throughout California.

WHAT IS CYAN's YOUTH BOARD OF DIRECTORS?
CYAN's Youth Board of Directors (YBOD) is made up of 6-8 youth from around the state who is interested in working closely with CYAN staff to empower California teens to get engaged in tobacco-free policy advocacy.  

WHAT DOES THE YBOD DO?
  • Empowers California teens to get engaged in tobacco-free policy advocacy.
  • Works closely with CYAN staff to provide direction for California’s statewide youth tobacco control campaigns.
  • Plans statewide activities, trainings, and Youth Quest.
  • May represent CYAN at various conferences and events.
  • May have opportunities to facilitate workshops at conferences and events.
WHAT WILL I GET FROM THIS EXPERIENCE?
  • Develop leadership and collaboration skills.
  • Sharpen public speaking and communication skills.
  • Increase knowledge of current tobacco issues.
  • Network with other teen advocates from around the state.
  • Increase experience for resume/college applications.
WHAT WOULD MY COMMITMENT TO CYAN BE?
  • Attend teleconferences/web meetings 1-2 a month.
  • Attend 2-3 in-person weekend YBOD meetings in Sacramento (all expenses paid by CYAN).
  • May attend local CYAN sponsored trainings and events (expenses paid by CYAN).
  • Help plan statewide activities, campaigns, trainings, and Youth Quest.
  • Stay in regular communication with CYAN staff and other YBOD members via email, phone, and web.
APPLICANTS MUST BE:
  • Actively involved in local tobacco control activities.
  • California residents.
  • Entering the 10th-12th grades during the 2017-2018 school year.
  • Able to serve a one-year term (July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2018).
  • Able to check email on a regular basis.
  • Hard working, enthusiastic, team players.
  • Expresses confidence in sharing their ideas and a willingness to speak up.
  • Committed to fighting the tobacco industry and spreading the truth about tobacco.
  • Willing and able to travel to in-person YBOD meetings, trainings, and conferences in Sacramento.  (Every effort will be made to have nearby YBOD members travel together to CYAN sponsored events; however, it is possible that YBOD members may need to travel to an event alone.)
HOW DO I APPLY?
  • You may apply for the YBOD by completing this application.
  • Please include contact information for two references (at least one reference should be your tobacco control advisor).
  • Deadline: All applications must be submitted by Sunday, June 11th, 2017.
