Thank you for your interest in applying for CYAN’s Youth Board of Directors (YBOD)!  
 
Please read the following YBOD requirements before completing and submitting your application. 
 
What is CYAN?
The California Youth Advocacy Network (CYAN) is an organization dedicated to supporting youth tobacco prevention and advocacy throughout California. 
 
What is CYAN's Youth Board of Directors?
CYAN's Youth Board of Directors is made up of 6-10 high school aged youth from across the state who are interested in working closely with CYAN staff to empower teens to advocate for a tobacco-free California.  

What does the YBOD do?

- Empowers teens to advocate for tobacco-free policy.
- Works closely with CYAN staff to provide direction for California's youth tobacco control materials, activities, trainings, and events. 
- May represent CYAN and/or facilitate workshops at conferences and events. 

What will I get from this experience? 
- Develop leadership, public speaking, and communication skills. 
- Have opportunities to use new skills to educate decision makers and peers across the state on creating tobacco-free communities. 
- Increase knowledge of current tobacco issues. 
- Have fun working with other teen advocates from around the state. 
- Increase experience for resume/college applications. 

What would my commitment to CYAN be?
- Attend online video meetings 1-2 times/month 
- Attend 2-3 in-person weekend YBOD meetings, summer leadership training, Youth Quest and the Statewide Youth Advocacy Conference in Sacramento and surrounding areas (all expenses paid by CYAN).
-Help plan statewide activities, campaigns, trainings, and events. 
- Stay in regular communication with CYAN staff and other YBOD members via email, phone, and internet. 

Applicants must be:
- Actively involved in local tobacco control/prevention activities. 
- California residents 
- Able to commit time to work, meetings, and travel associated with serving on board
- Entering the 10th-12th grades during the 2019-2020 school year
- Able to serve a one-year term (July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020)
- Able to respond to email and text communication on a regular basis
- Hard-working, enthusiastic, team players
- Confident in sharing their ideas and a willingness to speak up
- Committed to fighting the tobacco industry and spreading the truth about tobacco
- Willing and able to travel to in-person YBOD meetings, trainings, and conferences in Sacramento and surrounding areas.

You may apply for the YBOD by completing this application. Please include contact information for two references (at least one reference should be your tobacco control advisor).
