YAC Information Sheet

What is YAC?
The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) of Fremont Area Community Foundation is a student-run committee focused on meeting the needs of Newaygo County youth through grantmaking and service-learning. The committee is comprised of 24 high school students representing Fremont, Grant, Hesperia, Newaygo, and White Cloud public high schools as well as the homeschooling community. Once selected, students are asked to be YAC members throughout their four years of high school. Since our YAC began in 1994, more than 200 youth have served on the committee and they have granted more than $1 million to address the needs of local youth.

What do YACers do?
Throughout the year, YACers work in the areas of community service, public relations, and grantmaking and evaluation. YAC has three major responsibilities:

1.       Partake in at least three community service activities (when current health and safety protocols allow)

2.       Review grant requests and make recommendations to the Community Foundation Board of Trustees

3.       Determine the needs of area youth in Newaygo County

When do YACers meet?
YAC typically meets the second Friday of the month from September to May. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, meetings took place from 8:45 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Community Foundation office. During the pandemic, meetings have been held virtually from 8:45-10:45 a.m. Each school principal has approved the time away from class. Lunch is provided for in-person meetings. Each year, YACers also typically attend three community service projects.

Are YOU ready to be a YACer?
YAC is seeking students with leadership potential who are going into ninth grade. A YACer should attend each meeting and be a responsible student with a positive attitude. YACers represent all grade levels and interests, reflecting the diversity of Newaygo County.

Why should you be interested in YAC? Here’s what former YACers had to say:

“What I have experienced in YAC has definitely made me a better person and leader alike. I also will be able to apply these experiences later on in life to help make the best decisions possible.”
--Jonathan, graduate from Grant

“YAC has opened my eyes to the impact youth can have on our community and has opened a door to a life of leadership and service that I want to continue to lead.”
--Christiana, graduate from White Cloud
