The Lee County Health Department is considering increasing the services that we offer in our Maternity Clinic. One of the services commonly needed but not available in this clinic is a non-stress test or NST. A fetal non-stress test (NST) is a diagnostic test that can help determine the well-being of an unborn baby. This test is helpful in determining if the unborn baby responds normally to stimulation and is getting enough oxygen. This test can help the provider determine if the mother and baby need interventions, such as admission to the hospital, transfer of care to a high-risk pregnancy care, or early induction of labor.
A non-stress is a noninvasive test that involves placing two monitors on the mother’s abdomen. One to monitor the baby’s heartbeat and one to monitor contractions. The mother will also have a button that she will push when she feels baby movement, this will be marked on the graph as well. This allows us to assess fetal activity as a measure of its wellbeing. A normal physiological response is for the heartbeat to rise with activity and slow with rest. Fetus’s heartrates will do the same in utero if they are getting the oxygen and nutrients that they need. A “reactive” non-stress test tells providers that the fetus has a normal neurological response, so it has the oxygen and the nutrients that it needs. The fetus’ neurological status to cardiovascular reflex responses is one of the factors that tends to disappear earliest during fetal compromise. In the finding of a “nonreactive” non-stress test, the mother would be sent to Labor and Delivery for increased monitoring and possible provider interventions.

Una prueba “reactiva” sin estrés les dice a los proveedores que el feto tiene una respuesta neurológica normal, por lo que tiene el oxígeno y los nutrientes que necesita. El estado neurológico del feto ante las respuestas reflejas cardiovasculares es uno de los factores que tiende a desaparecer más tempranamente durante el compromiso fetal. Si se encuentra una prueba sin estrés “no reactiva”, la madre sería enviada a la sala de partos para un mayor seguimiento y posibles intervenciones del proveedor.
