DESCRIPTION OF RESEARCH: As a pre-doctoral fellow with the Global HELP – Health and Education Leadership Program, within the Department of Health and Behavior Studies, at Teachers College, Columbia University, in New York, New York, I am working with my sponsor on this study. We seek to understand what men who have sex with men (MSM) report as their experience and awareness when it comes to any sexual risk taking. We also want to know what men who have sex with men (MSM) think about an HIV/AIDS prevention peer education training manual we want to modify so it can be used with MSM; we are asking for ratings of the manual and recommendations for improving it. Our goal is to use what we learn from this study to modify and improve the HIV/AIDS prevention peer education training manual so it is more appropriate for MSM and better meets their needs.

RISKS AND BENEFITS: There are no anticipated risks to any of the participants in this study. However, some men might experience some emotional pain, sadness, or stress related to thinking about their experiences as a result of their sexual behavior. Although, we would encourage study completion, a participant can discontinue participation in this study at any time. Simply click “end/exit” to exit the study, or delete the whole email or study link entirely. Any participant who becomes upset can pursue help, as follows, as an Internet user: www.BriefCounseling.com to talk to a psychologist by phone (with the first five minutes being free); Gay Men’s Health Crisis www.gmhc.org (Hotline: 1-800-243-7692); Gay and Lesbian National Hotline www.glnh.org; Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender National Hotline: 1-888-843-4564); or explore local resources by zip code area via www.GLBTnearME.org; Gay Men’s Counseling.com via www.gaymenscounseling.com/online.html; or Complete Counseling Solutions via www.completecounselingsolutions.com. Again, we do not think that study participation will trigger so much pain that this is necessary, but we offer these suggestions as a precaution.

PAYMENTS: There are no payments associated with participating in this study. However, you have a 3 out of 200 chance of winning a gift certificate ($100, $100 or $50). Once 200 people have completed the entire survey, the program will automatically send out gift certificates (bar coded for Amazon.com) to 3 randomly chosen e-mail accounts without in any way linking your identity to the survey results.

DATA STORAGE TO PROTECT CONFIDENTIALITY: Since this is an online survey, actual names, addresses and phone numbers are not needed, and only aggregate (group) data will be utilized. The designers of the website have taken steps to ensure that all data will remain secure, private and confidential

TIME INVOLVEMENT: Study participation should take about 25- 40 minutes.

HOW RESULTS WILL BE USED: The results of the study will be used mainly for the purpose of health education, specifically, to improve the online prevention interventions for MSM. This information will also be used as dissertation data for the researchers’ doctorate degree in health education. The data will be presented at health education meetings, published in journals and used for other educational purposes.
