Skokie Flag - Public Input Survey

The Village of Skokie would like your input as it selects a new Skokie flag!

Background: In March 2025, the Village Board adopted a new Village seal following a comprehensive review and design process, replacing the previous seal used since the 1940s. The current Skokie flag depicts the previous seal and must now be updated.

The process: Following a public call for submissions, a panel of Skokie artists, graphic designers and Village staff reviewed 79 designs received. With support from the North American Vexillological Association (NAVA), three finalist designs were selected.

Provide your input: Please review the three designs and descriptions below and share your input. Feedback will be reviewed by the Village’s flag review panel before staff recommend a final design to the Village Board for approval. This survey will close on Sunday, March 8.
Design 1: Skokie Spirit - Buddy Boor

Description: This flag is inspired by the “Skokie Spirit” flame depicted in Joe Folise's 1978 stained glass at Village Hall and the new village seal. The flame is a reminder of the strength of our community when we all band together. Set on a dark green background as a nod to the current flag, the yellow and orange feel like a bright beacon of hope. Having the “Skokie Spirit” flame on Village Hall, the seal, and the flag would cement the imagery as a municipal symbol and source of civic pride.

Description: This flag symbolizes Skokie’s natural beauty, history, and community spirit. The golden flame at the center, inspired by Potawatomi symbolism, represents life, resilience, and the shared diversity that defines the village. Beneath it, the flowing white waves honor Skokie’s heritage as “marsh” or “prairie,” reflecting both its natural waterways and the village’s ongoing vitality. The green field stands for Skokie’s many parks, trees, and commitment to growth and sustainability. Together, these elements convey a unified vision of Skokie as a vibrant, welcoming, and resilient community.

Description: The design honors the Council of Three Fires—the Ojibwe (Chippewa), Odawa (Ottawa), and Potawatomi tribes—who are historically connected to this region. The central FLAME symbolizes their unity and enduring presence. The BLUE represents the North Shore Channel, which runs along Skokie’s eastern edge, while the GREEN reflects the lush parks and natural spaces of the area. The name Skokie, derived from the Potawatomi word Wabskoki, means “marsh,” paying tribute to the region’s original landscape.
