* 4. The East Town neighborhood was Joplin’s first settlement, dating back to 1838. In 1873, East Town merged with Murphysburg to become what we now know as the City of Joplin. Thus, Broadway/Langston Hughes BLVD, which threads through East Town and is an original part of historic Route 66, was Joplin's first Main Street. Revitalizing and preserving this part of Joplin history has been a long-time goal of local historians, preservationists, and residents alike.
