1. Introduction

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • This survey is an initiative to measure and improve the state of diversity, equity and inclusion in the global XR industry
  • Responses are completely anonymous (unless you voluntarily enter personal or contact information in the comment field at the end). 
  • All responses are combined and summarized anonymously into a single report that will be made publicly available in early 2021. 
  • This survey is entirely optional and you’ll have the ability to answer with "I'd rather not say" or skip certain questions.
  • This survey has 20 questions.
As an early industry, we have the opportunity to consciously build an inclusive, diverse and equitable immersive future. In addition to creating a sense of empowerment and belonging for people of all backgrounds, studies have also shown that diverse and inclusive companies consistently outperform their less diverse counterparts. By working together as an industry to measure key data points, share lessons learned and implement solutions, we can actively foster a more equitable and successful XR ecosystem.

We recognize that identity is a complex mix of one’s social environment, historical and sociopolitical constructs, personal experience, context, and many other factors. The council of D&I, HR, Legal and XR experts at XRI have done their best to create a set of questions that are holistic and inclusive. If you have any suggestions for improvement, we are always open to feedback. Definitions:

Diversity: Differences between people that can include dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, age, abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other factors. Diversity empowers us to see past our blind spots and understand the world from different perspectives.

Equity: Recognizing that advantages and barriers exist, and that, as a result, we don’t all start from the same place. Equity is a process that begins by acknowledging that unequal starting place then continuing to correct and address the imbalance.

Inclusion: Including and accommodating all people, with a particular focus on those who have historically been excluded. Inclusion is more than a seat at the table; it’s a voice at the table. 

XR: Covers a range of immersive and spatial computing technologies including augmented reality, mixed reality, and virtual reality.
