Applications due December 4, 2020

In 2019-2020, the Society for Vascular Surgery and its Leadership Develop Committee launched the inaugural Leadership Development Program (LDP), in collaboration with SCVS and VESS. A diverse cohort of 25 vascular surgeons was selected to participate, and despite COVID-19 delaying the program and forcing a move to a fully virtual environment, early evaluations indicate that it’s been an impactful learning experience. We are now seeking applicants for the 2021 cohort.

Congratulations to the 2020 LDP participants!

Participant Feedback

“The SVS Leadership Development Program has helped me to re-focus my goals as I enter the second stage of my career. The opportunity to hear from leaders within our small specialty who have had success at an institutional level gives me hope for the changes I would like to make in my current work environment. More than anything, though, it is the camaraderie and relationships renewed and developed that have re-invigorated my outlook for the future.”
- Benjamin J. Pearce, MD, FACS

The SVS LDP is a highly interactive program implemented over a six-month period, January-May with self-study and monthly online education, and will culminate in a recognition event in June at the 2021 VAM.

The goal of the program is to provide a meaningful, longitudinal leadership development experience for an annual cohort, selected through a competitive process. The content is drawn from the highest quality research on leadership, and then pivots to an intense focus on applying this knowledge to the real-life leadership and management challenges vascular surgeons face each day. Each member of the selected cohort will be asked to identify leadership challenges they are experiencing and wish to advance during the course, and after, through follow-up peer mentoring group calls. The aim is to accelerate our community of vascular surgeons to reach their full potential as leaders and make the most positive impact possible in our specialty, their place of work, their community, and other areas of importance in their life.

Content highlights include expert guest faculty sessions such as:
  • The business and economics of health care
  • Decisions in the C-Suite
  • The science and physics of leadership
  • Personality styles, leadership styles and emotional intelligence
  • Conflict and negotiation
And a stellar core faculty of vascular surgeons will develop and deliver customized content such as:
  • Leading Self: Modeling the way, building credibility and trust in leadership
  • Leading Others: building and sustaining high-performance teams; encouraging the heart and optimizing motivation
  • Leading Change: inspiring share vision, challenging the process, leading change
  • Leading Results: strategy development and execution
