RSB Pulse – Research funding in UK research organisations

The Royal Society of Biology (RSB) acts as a single unified voice for biology, advising Government and influencing policy.

The Society is launching a series of calls for evidence, entitled ‘RSB Pulse’, to engage with our community on key policy issues, enriching and maintaining the evidence base that informs our policy work.

Earlier this year, the RSB responded to the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funding changes announcements by calling for greater transparency and further community engagement to deliver long-term financial sustainability for the research and innovation community.

In this first edition of RSB Pulse, we are inviting evidence and expert opinion on research funding in UK research organisations. Your anonymous submissions to this first survey will inform RSB's recommendations to policymakers and advisers at the highest levels of Government. Recommendations will also feed directly into the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and Medical Research Council (MRC), who have agreed to consider the aggregated and anonymised final analysis of this survey, as part of their ongoing community engagement exercise.

We’re calling for evidence-informed perspectives from people based at research organisations e.g. published research outputs or data, evidenced opinion, concerns, successes and insights.

We welcome responses from anyone with answers to the following questions, but are particularly keen to hear from those working in, supporting or managing research at research organisations in the UK.

Please submit your responses by 7 August 2026. Should you have any questions, please contact consultation@rsb.org.uk.

This survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

Any information provided that could specifically identify an individual or organisation will be aggregated and anonymised in the data analysis and reporting process. Information on data use, retention and your legal rights can be found in RSB's privacy policy.

Some of the questions call for sharing case studies and evidence. You will find dedicated spaces to share those throughout the survey, with opportunities to upload PDF, DOC, DOCX, PNG, JPG or JPEG files.
