Overview

The Labour Relations Code (LRC) applies to unionized employees in the private sector. Police, public sector employees and the education sector are covered under separate Acts.

The LRC sets the rules for union-management relations and covers items such as how unions are established, collective bargaining, strikes, collective agreements and unfair labour practices.

Any changes will impact unionized employers but also impact non-union employers should employees exercise their right to join a union.

As part of the workplace legislation review, the Alberta government is seeking input on a number of areas including:

1.     Union Certification
2.     Definition of Employer/Employee and Successor Rights
3.     Union Dues Deductions
4.     Reverse Onus
5.     Dispute Resolution
6.     Alberta Labour Relations Board
7.     Other areas for consideration
