Education Department- Tutoring Survey For MNCFN Secodary School Parents and Guardians Only Question Title * 1. Dear Parent/Guardian;The Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation Education Department is considering test piloting secondary school tutoring services. We have received a proposal from Sylvan Learning but before we can begin we need to know if your student would benefit from this. Please note that tutoring costs would be completely covered by the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation Education Department; however it is the parent’s responsibility to transport their child to each session. The “satellite” location would be located on the MNCFN territory (TBD). There are a couple of options available: 1. Personal Learning (specifically designed for each student- for the student demonstrating significant learning difficulties in math or reading) (2 one hour sessions per week with a 3:1 ratio):a. It will start with a Sylvan Insight Assessment that includes a skills assessment that pinpoints each student’s learning strengths and needs.b. Using the information from the assessment they will identify where each student should be placed along Sylvan’s Learning progression.c. It will combine personal instruction with a digital instructional system that lets our teachers focus their energy on guiding, motivating, and encouraging each student that makes learning personal, rewarding and fun.d. Finally they will monitor progress through progress assessments as well as giving an online portal where parents can access their child’s progress. e. A 40 hour minimum commitment and consistent attendance is required for this program to make an impact. 1. Homework Support/Zone (can drop in on an as needed basis during operating hours, 6:1 ratio):a. Students bring in their planners, textbooks and assignments. They work directly from the same materials that they use in class.b. They provide teachers with subject area expertise, especially subjects such as upper level math where parents often have difficulty helping their children. c. This becomes a regular dedicated time for children to complete their homework and helps reduce late night homework stress.d. Families can know that a controlled quiet environment is provided for homework to be completed. 1. A combination of the two above options to give support needed but also working through missed concepts through their personal learning program (3:1 ratio).
