The Government of Alberta has recently announced that the funding formula for the Official Languages Education Protocol (OLEP) has been adjusted- resulting in a substantial reduction of the per student funding for French second language programs. This means that the school district will have less money to support students in French second language programs (i.e. socio-cultural activities, individual language supports, teacher professional development, etc...). This will potentially jeopardize the very existence of French Immersion and French second language programs in Alberta.

We urge you to join our letter writing campaign to show your support for French Immersion and French second language programs by filling out the form below. The information you provide, along with your personal comments, will be formatted into a letter which will then be printed off and sent to the Minister of Education on your behalf. Together, we hope to pressure the government to reconsider their decision!

* 4. SUBJECT : OLEP (Official Languages Education Protocol) Funding Formula Change

Premier Kenney, Minister LaGrange,

It has been brought to my attention that as a result of recent decisions made by the Government of Alberta, the funding formula for the Official Languages Education Protocol has been adjusted, meaning a substantial reduction for French second language programs. This will jeopardize the very existence of French Immersion and French second language programs in Alberta.

Personalized comments can be inserted here.

Today, Alberta has more than 192,000 students enrolled in French second language programs throughout the province. We are recognized as a French second language champion within Canada. Reducing OLEP funding to French second language programs will inevitably come at the students’ expense. Many school communities that already experience challenges will be forced to make difficult decisions in either limiting or eliminating the ability to offer them.

I urge you to work jointly with the Canadian Parents for French Alberta in order to find a solution as soon as possible to ensure existing French second language programs do not disappear.

Sincerely,

C.c.:

Honourable Leela Aheer, Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women and Minister responsible for the Francophone Secrétariat

Laila Goodridge, Parliamentary secretary responsible for Alberta's Francophonie
