The uncontrolled and rapidly increasing number of deer in our town – currently in excess of 65 per square mile – has brought on a health, safety and environmental crisis with widespread cases of deer tick-borne illnesses, auto/deer accidents, forest understory and native species destruction, landscape and crop damage, and pollution of our waters.
Research shows that reducing that number to 8-10 or fewer results in virtual elimination of ticks and tick-borne illness as well as recovery of the understory and native species.
We the undersigned call on the Town of Southold to take action to reduce the deer population from the current level of 65 plus per square mile to 8-10 or fewer per square mile through the proven means of targeted removal (e.g. the USDA sharpshooter program).
