Copy of Indigenous Learning and Anti-Racism initiatives Survey to Parents of students at the Calgary Board of Education

Dear parents and caregivers,

The Reconciliation Action Group has been in communication this past Fall with the Calgary Board of Education about their Indigenous learning and Anti-Racism initiatives.

While we appreciate the work they have undertaken over the last few years, especially at the leadership level, we would like to know how these initiatives do or do not affect what goes on in individual classrooms and schools. We are concerned about the lack of mechanisms to measure this and to hold principals and teachers accountable for implementing what is transformative work.

This is where you as parents and caregivers come in. We are hoping that with your input we can develop a better picture of what is happening in the classroom and at the school level.

Therefore, we are hoping that you will fill out the attached survey. Your responses will be anonymous. We will share the general results with the CBE with a view to encouraging them to develop their own mechanisms to measure what is happening in classrooms and schools.

Thank you
1.Are you Indigenous or non-Indigenous?
2.How many children do you have in the CBE?
3.What grades are your children in?
4.Are you aware of Indigenous Learning and anti-racism initiatives in your children’s classroom?
5.Is the classroom teacher or school proactive in offering opportunities or do you need to ask for them?
6.If you have had to ask for these Indigenous Learning and/or anti-racism learning opportunities, what has the response been?
7.Are you satisfied with the Indigenous and anti-racism Learning opportunities provided by the teacher or school?
8.Have you or your child ever experienced discriminatory treatment? How did the teacher or school respond?
9.Do you have stories you would like to share about your experiences with the CBE in relation to Indigenous and anti-racism learning opportunities or instances of discrimination?
