At Northumberland United Way, we believe that everyone deserves a safe, stable place to call home. The Haven for All’s Diversion Funds program is designed to support individuals and families who are at a risk of homelessness by providing flexible, short-term financial assistance that helps them remain housed or secure alternative housing without entering the shelter system.
Diversion funds can be used in a variety of ways to prevent homelessness, including but not limited to:
- Emergency home repairs that make a residence habitable
- Security deposits or first month’s rent
- Utility payments to prevent shutoff
- Transportation or relocation assistance
- Other creative solutions that help individuals maintain or obtain safe, affordable housing
The maximum amount that can be applied for through this program for a client is $250. We recognize that this amount may not fully cover all housing-related needs, and applicants are encouraged to leverage additional funding sources or community supports where possible to create a comprehensive solution.
This program is intended for those who have access to housing—whether through a lease, informal agreement, or other arrangement—but face financial or logistical barriers that could lead to shelter entry. By addressing these barriers early, we aim to keep people housed, reduce the strain on emergency shelter resources, and promote long-term housing stability.
We encourage service providers to think flexibly and creatively about how these funds can be used for their clients to support housing solutions that are cost-effective, timely, and person-centered.
