How safe is your Thanksgiving?

This is a self-scoring quiz to help you evaluate how safe your Thanksgiving plans are. Your goal is to have the highest score you can: the higher your score the safer your plans. * 3. What are your plans if someone in your household has signs or symptoms of COVID?

It's Thanksgiving. And it's probably just allergies. We'll give them their usual seat, but they better not cough or sneeze on anyone. That's gross!

I can't keep someone away from the Thanksgiving table, but I don't want to get sick either! We'll give them a seat at the one end of the table. Everyone else will huddle together on the other end.

We will stay home. The sick person will stay in their own room, and we will bring them dinner. We will video chat so they can join us remotely. The rest of us will eat together at the table.

I'm so sorry! We can't get together for Thanksgiving today, but I am happy to share the food we made. I'll leave it outside, if you want to stop by and pick it up. I'll also leave some disinfecting wipes so you can decontaminate the container before you take it home.

We don't have to worry about this one. We are only gathering with our household. See my answer from question 3.

Someone has symptoms, but this happens to them every year. I don't think it's a big deal. I just don't feel like this is COVID. Let's get together as planned.

* 5. If more than one household is gathering in person, what are the seating arrangements?

Not a problem for us. We're keeping it limited to our household.

It's not Thanksgiving if we aren't sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with our friends and family. We'll gather around the table like we usually do.

We have a big table, so we will sit on opposite ends. The people in the middle may be closer than 6 feet, but how else will we be able to pass the food?

We're setting up separate tables, and we'll use a tape measure to make sure they are exactly 6 feet apart. This should work perfectly, as long as no one leans back too far.

* 6. How do you plan to serve food?

Food will be passed from one household group to another OR we will set up a food line. Each person will serve themselves. We don't plan to wear masks while getting food. All people will wash their hands before they begin eating.

Away from the table, one person will wash their hands and then make individual plates for each person, while wearing a mask. The plates will be placed at each seat. The same person will make additional plates the same way for people who want seconds.

Each household will have their own portions of each dish. Food preparers will wash their hands often and wear masks while moving the food into each household's serving dishes.

We will set up a serving line away from where we are eating. People will wear their masks when they go through the line. One household will go and then the next. Serving utensils will be washed or replaced between households. People will get a new plate if they want seconds.

We are only gathering within our household, so no special plans are needed.

* 7. How many in person events do you have planned on Thanksgiving?

We have just one Thanksgiving celebration planned at one location. The people who join us there are the only people we are going to see in person. But we might talk on the phone or video chat with a bunch of other people.

We plan to go to two different locations. We will interact, in person, with different people at each location. Who needs seconds? I have two Thanksgiving meals!

* 8. Do you have a plan for bathrooms on Thanksgiving?

Households will be sharing a bathroom. We will have soap, and people will probably know how to use it. We have no plans to remind people about how to wash their hands.

I don't think this applies to me... We are only celebrating with our household.

Households will be sharing a bathroom. We won't set out cleaning supplies, but we will have plenty of soap and hand sanitizer. We'll encourage everyone to wash their hands for the recommended 20 seconds, then open the bathroom door, and finally use the hand sanitizer right before they leave.

Households may have to share a bathroom, but we will set out EPA-approved disinfectant spray and cleaning wipes. Each person will clean the surfaces they touched before they leave. Parents will help small children with the cleaning.

Each household will have a designated bathroom, and they will be cleaned as soon as Thanksgiving is over.

* 9. What is your plan for masks and social distancing at your Thanksgiving celebration?

We are sharing Thanksgiving with our closest friends and family. We are not planning to wear masks or social distance. I feel like I can trust them not to give me COVID.

Masks may not be worn by everyone and/or some people may not wear them properly (covering both their nose and mouth). But we will maintain at least 6 feet of distance throughout the day.

Masks will not be worn by everyone, and we may be closer than 6 feet for short intervals of time, hopefully no more than 15 minutes.

Households will remain at least 6 feet from each other for the entire Thanksgiving celebration. Masks will be worn by everyone throughout the day. They will only be taken off when we are actively eating our meal. We'll put them back on as soon as we finish eating, even if we are still sitting at the table.

However we want. We all share the same residence.

With a warm "hello" and heartfelt "goodbye" from at least 6 feet away. We may even wave as they arrive or drive home.
