Mobile Technology in Healthcare: The Impact of Security and Privacy

Overview:

Wireless technology and mobile health applications have the potential to transform standard approaches to treat, monitor and educate patient populations.  Innovative methods that incorporate voice, text, data, camera images, and streaming video functions are enabling providers and government agencies to more effectively deliver healthcare services to military members, veterans, and the general patient population in urban and rural areas.

This explosive growth of mobile technologies in healthcare environments has led to new concerns that impact all those involved throughout the healthcare continuum – from patient to provider to payer.  Such concerns include:

 ·         Message transmission security

·         Data storage security

·         Inaccuracy of patient-provided data

·         Consolidation of patient data and the interoperability of record systems

·         Threats of cyber crime, malware and mobile device thefts

 Objectives of this Forum:

·         Identify the privacy and security issues of health IT and the impact on government, as it relates to the widespread use and availability of mobile technologies

·         Discuss how the presidential transition may impact population health and public policy with subsequent impact on healthcare data

·         Assess current guidelines and necessary changes

·         Determine the government needs

·         Provide feedback and recommendations from industry that will be consolidated and presented to the government in a white paper.
