This is a government reform to reduce the number of councils across NZ. The reform will streamline the structure of local government and enhance the delivery of the new resource management and planning reforms.
Amalgamation is not what our Council or community wants, but under the proposed reform, change is going to happen. The Government has confirmed that Councils which do not submit a 'Head Start' proposal by 9 August 2026, will have amalgamation decisions made by the Government.
