Awardee Characteristics – Distinguished Career
In 2008 the Northwest Organization of Nurse Executives, in their commitment to recognition and awards for nurses demonstrating an exceptional lifelong commitment to their profession, created an award for a Distinguished Career. This award was specifically created to honor those who chose to give of their time and talents to the profession through both their career path and through active volunteer service in professional organizations. They have made contributions to the profession through publications, research, and/or teaching or public speaking. Frequently they are people who have influenced and mentored many, who have served in varied capacities across their profession and who have service beyond employment to the nursing community. They are very often our heroes and our sources of professional inspiration. This award is given to a nurse leader of distinction, in any leadership role, who is in active practice in the Pacific Northwest and who displays many of the following characteristics consistent with a lifelong commitment to the profession of nursing:

• Has provided a significant amount of volunteer service, over time, to NWONE or other professional nursing groups/organizations/associations
• Has achieved tangible outcomes through professional service & their career that have:
  • Increased the professional influence or stature of nursing
  • Improved collaboration across organizational boundaries
  • Achieved specific laudable outcomes
  • Provided vision and strategic direction to the profession
  • Contributed to the advancement of nursing science and nursing practice
  • Is a known professional leader in nursing
• Honors his/her license by demonstrating behaviors consistent with the public trust, & ensures that other professionals do the same
• Demonstrates knowledge & skill in effective decision making, true collaboration, meaningful recognition, skilled communication, & in acquiring & allocating appropriate human & environmental resources to support excellence in patient care
• Demonstrates current & contemporary understanding of healthcare & the profession of nursing
• Is able to generate enthusiasm for work that serves the larger profession or multiple professions in healthcare
• Clearly understands what it is that we can accomplish together, that we cannot accomplish alone
