1. Introduction

The Math and Science Bureau (MSB) of the New Mexico Public Education Department (PED) continues to support high-quality Computer Science instruction in grades K–8. The MSB is beginning to build a Community of Practice focused on integration of Computer Science in Kindergarten through 8th grade classrooms. 

This initiative is designed to support teachers interested in the integration of Computer Science into their classrooms. Through this Community of Practice, teachers will have opportunities to connect with other teachers interested in integrating Computer Science, grow in their coaching skills, and help spread Computer Science education.


As a member of the cohort, teachers are provided:
  • A $500 participation stipend
  • 6 Makey-Makey STEM invention kits
  • 1 Computational Thinking and Coding For Every Student book
  • 1 year long membership to Computer Science Teacher Alliance
To participate, teachers must commit to:
  • Meeting monthly (date and time TBD) via Zoom after-school hours
  • Coaching at least 1 other individual at their school site to integrate Computer Science into a lesson
Timeline:
  • October 25, 2022: Applications Open
  • November 23, 2022: Completed Applications Due
  • December 2nd, 2022: Participants notified
  • December 7th, 2022: Kick-off Zoom meeting (date/time TBA)
  • Monthly Zoom Meetings after schools hours (dates/times TBD) in January—May 2023
