Request to Participate
You are being asked to take part in a research study. This study is being conducted online through the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
The researcher in charge of this study is Dr. Laurel Watson. While the study will be run by her, other qualified persons who work with her may act for her.
Research studies only include people who choose to take part. This document is called a consent form. Please read this consent form carefully and take your time making your decision. This consent form explains what to expect: the risks, discomforts, and benefits, if any, if you consent to be in the study.
The study team is asking you to take part in this research study because you identify as a sexual minority man (gay, bisexual, omni-sexual, or questioning) over age 18. We are recruiting sexual minority men because we want to examine the unique ways that your experiences relate to your body image. You will be one of about 300 subjects in the study.
Prior research has shown that sexual minority males have many negative experiences in society. These experiences may affect their body image. We want to explore the unique ways in which sexual minority males’ social experiences affect their body image.
If you agree to participate in this study, you will be asked to complete a single online survey. This survey contains eight short and medium-length questionnaires. It should take approximately 30 minutes for you to complete. You may complete this survey online on any computer, but you must complete it in one sitting. You cannot save your responses and return to it later. You will only be involved in the study for the time it takes you to complete the survey.
Participation in this study is entirely voluntary. Even if you do agree to participate, you have the option to not answer certain survey questions. If you wish to withdraw from this study while taking the online survey, please close the survey window; your responses will only be collected if you complete the survey.
Risks and Inconveniences
The physical risks of taking part in this research study are not expected to be more than the risks in your daily life. However, you may experience mild to moderate psychological discomfort when answering some of the survey questions, which include questions about sexual harassment. There are no other known risks to you if you choose to take part in this study.
You may gain insight into your experiences and body image by answering the questions in the online survey. In addition, other people may benefit in the future from the information about sexual minority men’s experiences and body image that comes from this study.
Fees and Expenses
There are no fees or expenses to you for participating in this study.
If you meet the participation criteria and complete the online survey, you may choose to be entered into a raffle to receive one of eight $25.00 gift cards to Amazon.com. Odds of winning depend upon the number of subjects who enter the raffle, but are expected to be about 1:25.
Alternatives to Study Participation
The alternative is not to participate in the study.
