2018 Application Instructions

About the Scholarship

WSIA offers a scholarship opportunity for the E&S Program to qualified applicants employed by a WSIA member firm who is also a member of a designated state surplus lines association. For this program, these are the Louisiana Surplus Line Association (LSLA) and the New Jersey Surplus Lines Association (NJSLA).

The scholarship covers tuition, room and board and includes a travel stipend to offset travel expenses.

About the E&S Program

Gain solid understanding of how excess and surplus lines insurance works in the marketplace in this three-day introductory program. E&S participants analyze and discuss real world issues and leave with a foundational understanding of the dynamics and relationships between surplus lines brokers and carriers.

Surplus lines industry executives are the primary instructors. Attendees participate in a variety of self-directed learning settings such as study groups, panels and informal networking sessions. The school’s curriculum is reviewed annually to keep pace with emerging technology and the changing nature of the industry. Download a program brochure here to learn more.

Who Should Attend

The Excess & Surplus Lines program is designed for insurance professionals with less than five years of experience in the surplus lines industry. The program is also an excellent introduction to the surplus lines industry for new employees or even veteran insurance professionals who are just new to surplus lines. Persons with more than five years of surplus lines experience are encouraged to attend the Marcus Payne Advanced program which is offered each fall.

What Alumni Have to Say

“The program touched many aspects of the industry and provided a multi-dimensional perspective on the wholesale segment, the issues we face, the regulations that impact us and the opportunities that are available. I would definitely recommend this course to other younger professionals” — LAUREN EVANS, ALL RISKS, LTD.

“Listening to the accomplishments  and experiences of the presenters makes me proud to be a part of -this clearly needed, ever-changing industry. This motivated me and reaffirms my love and drive for the industry.” — ANDREW KOWAL, MARKEL
