HCDE Scholastic Awards: WRITING Adjudication
Your unique background qualifies you to serve as a volunteer juror in the 2019-20 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of Harris County Department of Education. As a juror, you will review works by students in grades 7-12 in the area(s) of your expertise. You will evaluate works based upon three major criteria: originality, technical skill, and personal vision and voice.
Each year thousands of students from public, private, and home schools submit works to the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of Harris County Department of Education. The opportunity to compete in the nation’s longest-running, largest, and most prestigious competition motivates these teenagers to produce their best writing in hopes of joining the ranks of former award recipients including Joyce Carol Oates, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, John Updike, Ken Burns, and Stephen King.
You will have access to an online portal with training materials, detailed rubrics, and scoring guides. Online adjudication will take place at your convenience using your personal computer in your own space, on your own time. It is typically a total commitment of 6-8 hours total over the span of a few weeks (December 16, 2019 to January 10, 2020).
